This actually happens in prison but to people who mildly piss off the guards. The beauty of this scene is also what makes Shawshank so unique and endlessly compelling. The reasons Andy plays the piece for the whole prison to hear is the part of him that wants everyone to know that hope and beauty can be kept alive, even in such awful conditions. And the moment when his peace is interrupted by the warden, and he nervously fiddles for a second before almost lifting the needle, only to look at the warden and turn that motherf* er up in beautiful, life-affirming defiance. It is one of the - in my opinion - most memorable scenes in all of film. Literally and figuratively, note perfect.
